Your basement area can be so much more than just a place to store items, it can give you added living space to enjoy. Since the cost of buying a larger home in most real estate markets is very expensive, you can get the best deal by simply making the most of the room you do have. There are many different ways you can choose to remodel your basement depending on what you want to do with the space. It can be used for a family room, bedroom, home office, or a bar.

Before you begin any remodeling though you need to thoroughly investigate your basement for any mold or musty smells as these are signs that you have water damage. You will need to take care of it before you remodel or you will end up with a finished basement you can’t enjoy. It is common for rain water to seep into the walls if the house is not designed to move it away. You can easily remedy this type of situation by adding drains that take it somewhere else.

Wallpaper isn’t a good idea in any basement because it allows mold to grow. It also keeps the walls from being able to dry on their own. Instead of using wallpaper consider painting them with latex paints. A dehumidifier is a great investment to help control the amount of moisture in your basement. Adding vinyl flooring will also seal it from moisture. There are several flooring options available for you to explore.

You should also take a look at your lighting options before you start remodeling your basement too. You can use artificial light but you will also want some natural sunlight to come in if possible. Heating your basement needs to be considered as well and you may have to make some changes to what is in place.

Many homeowners forget that they can expand their living spaces by remodeling their garages. Think about it – your garage is usually just sitting there, crowded with stuff if not your car. It is the perfect space for your new studio or pool house. You can turn your garage into the room of your dreams. Would it really be so bad to park your car in the driveway? If you live in a temperate climate, a car is not going to suffer much out of doors. Granted, if you live in Minnesota, you have a garage attached to your house for a reason. You can go straight to your car without having to step out into the cold. But if you live in a pleasant environment, try parking your car in the driveway and look at all the space you just opened up for yourself. You just added hundreds or even thousands more square feet to your living space.

Garages are so much fun to remodel because you can really personalize them. Have you always wanted an art studio, or a place to write your great American novel? Have you always wanted a workshop or a place to play music or whittle wood? Decide what the best use of the space would be. Do you need a place to put a washer and dryer set, or space for a deep freezer? If you have the money to do a big remodeling job, then consider turning the garage into a small apartment. You can either rent it out and make some extra money, or let one of your older children live in it. You could even reserve the apartment for an elderly parent or grandparent that you want to keep close to you. The apartment can be on the first floor, or you can add a second story to the garage, maintaining the parking space below. You can add a separate door on the second story with a staircase located outside the garage. This will be a nice retreat for anyone.

Garage remodeling jobs do not have to be huge. They are sometimes the simplest form of home repair that you can do. Most garages already have electricity, and many are already attached to the home and can easily be hooked up with plumbing. You do not necessarily have to install a bathroom in the garage and also work bench in garage, if the cost of that investment scares you. When you go to sell your house however, a separate “house” will always be a selling point. Just spend your remodeling money wisely and do not blow it on a lot of customized extras that will not come back to you in resale value.

If you do not need a new workshop or apartment, then consider turning your garage into a home gym. You do not even have to do major remodeling to put a treadmill or a stairclimber in the garage. You can put a set of free weights in there as well, and plug in a TV to watch while you are working out. Many people also decide to convert their garages into music studios. However, if you are going to go with this option, make sure to invest in some soundproofing so you do not alienate your neighbors.

Homes need regular maintenance in order to remain in tip top condition, it is actually possible for many home owners to do this themselves. Just as long as they have enough time on their hands DIY is possible. In order to remodel your home yourself you need to ensure you have the right tools and equipment available. Many DIY Exterior renovation projects are possible to complete in only a couple of days. Interior projects like installing kitchen cabinets may take lesser time.

The key to success is to plan thoroughly for your renovation. If you haven’t done any DIY projects like fixing kitchen cabinets before then you should spend time looking at all of the different parts of the job. You may have to buy some pretty expensive equipment in order to make your project a success, however it’s worth bearing in mind that you can also hire most of this equipment. Unless you are going to be doing lots of DIY then it is probably best to hire the tools that you need.

Many people paint the outside of their own homes instead of hiring a professional to do this. There is no reason you can’t do this project by yourself either. Before you start painting the outside of your home you must first prepare the surface, as with everything preparation is the key. If you prepare the surface then the paint will be able to key to it (get it?!). No matter whether you are painting all of the walls of your house, or just the exposed wood then you must plan and prepare in order to get a long lasting result.

Don’t go overboard

You shouldn’t try and do everything at the same time you need to carefully consider the tasks that need doing and the order in which you have to do them. This is very important, just consider if you were decorating your living room, would you want to do the walls before the ceiling? I don’t think so! Planning is vital to the success of your project.

If you are painting the outside of your house then there will be a lot of surfaces to repair, you may be tempted to prepare the whole house all in one go. And then paint it. However this would mean you would have to move the ladder round which is very time consuming.

It would be much easier if you completed a whole wall, before moving around onto the other walls. Doing this will save you a lot of time, plus it’s more organised. You should also be able to see the effects starting to take shape much faster. Just make sure you don’t get any dust in your paintwork!

If you are not very experienced in DIY then you should certainly ask for advice from professionals. If you are too proud to ask for advice then fortunately you can search for answers to your questions on the internet. There are hundreds of DIY related articles on the internet, you should be able to answer all of your questions just by searching on the internet.

Some homeowners find it necessary to apply for home improvement loans because they may lack the necessary budget or don’t have enough savings to finance their home improvement project. Even a secured personal loan may serve as a source of home improvement loans.

In the US, it is possible to get home improvement loans either for projects that you hired a contractor for, or for do-it-yourself projects. Some lenders stipulate that their company will be responsible for releasing the checks representing the amount to be paid to the home improvement supplies company or to the contractor. For do-it-yourself projects, the lender may send the check to the home improvement supplies company instead of giving you the money outright.

If you prefer getting a lump sum, you might apply for a home equity loan which means your home will be assessed by the lender for the amount of equity it presently has and the corresponding value of the loan you (and your home) qualify for. A home equity loan is advantageous because the payments are stretched out over a longer pay period. $50,000 loans to remodel your home fall under this category – meaning, you will be granted a loan of $50,000 if the lender believes your home has at least that much in home equity left in it. This is a good strategy to pursue if you want to make your home increase in value for the long term, because the loan allows you to make necessary repairs and upgrades of your home. In effect, you can command a better price for your home later on.

If you are trying to get a federal grant, you may want to examine the Title 1 loan offered by the Federal Housing Administration under the Home Mortgage Insurance Division of the Office of Housing of the HUD. Although the HUD does not itself offer home improvement loans, the Federal Housing Administration may help you find a lender who will lend to you (provided the lender is accredited with the HUD.)

Some cities in the US offer a city rehabilitation loan program to homeowners in the low-income wage bracket so that they can undertake home improvement necessary to keep their residence livable. These loans require repayment at low interest rates, though. Check with your city government regarding how long it takes to apply for the loan, and the particulars about how it works. You should also inquire about who gets approved for such loans and where to apply.

Regardless of what loan you get, you may have to get acquainted as well with the process of finding an approved contractor. Some contractors operate without accreditation, since not all homeowners are so particular about who they hire. The advantage with hiring an accredited contractor is that the contractor is required to adhere to certain standards in the way he runs his business, which gives you more peace of mind, knowing that you can always file a complaint against the contractor and his company if he doesn’t do the job right.
